'15' The Film(left),Royston Tan(right)
Hi there people.I'm apologizing again for not updating.Anyway i uploaded 2 videos from Youtube. However both the videos are in Hokkien(a dialect). For those of you who can't make out what the characters are saying, just concentrate on their movements and you should be fine.Well, these 2 videos are part of a Mandarin-Hokkien film directed and written by Singaporean film maker Royston Tan.This 93 min. film entitled ( si wu) or 15 in English is a graphic exploration of Singapore's unseen underbelly. The film emphasizes on what it's like to be young, alone and angry in a city that refuses to acknowledge your existence. It uses real life street kids who reinterpret Tan's vision from their eerily similar lives.Unfortunately this 'political film' is banned in Singapore. It has given local censors their biggest ever headache by focusing on Singapore’s ‘problem’ boys: the ones from broken homes, the ones who smuggle drugs, the drop-outs, the ones who tend to die young.Despite the ban,the movie sold out its initial run at the Singapore Film Festival, took home many of the major awards and was selected to compete in the prestigious Venice Film Festival.

2006 FIFA World Cup logo
(left)
Hi there.Did you people catch the 2006 FIFA World Cup matches on ESPN?Personally,i don't really like this year's world cup. There're just too many red and yellow cards.Topping that is the numerous penalties. Moreover, most of the good teams like Brazil and England are out. What's more is that the Singaporean referee Shamsul Maidin sucked at doing what he was supposed to do.Such a World Cup is indeed a big disappointment to the fans.As for the winner,i'm left with no choice but to pin all my votes on France.

Hey people.Once again it's me,updating after a million years.Anyway,i've just put up a player on my blog.Scroll down the tagboard and you'll see it.It doesn't autoplay so kindly click the play button on the extreme left of the player. The song by the way on the player is Cobrastyle by Teddybears Sthlm.I guess most of you people have heard the song before on a Heineken Beer commercial.Which one?Well, its the one where this guy walks into club Greenspace, picks up a bottle and starts to dance popping.Popping (a.k.a. hitting) is a funk dance and street dance style based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer's body.It is believed that this dance evolved in California. For those of you out there who have not seen this commercial, with dance moves choreographed by David Bernal(a.k.a. David Elsewhere),you may do so at http://youtube.com/watch?v=sORvhqvrkYs&search=greenspace .Compliments from Youtube.com.

My Sneakers(left)

Finally,it has arrived from the States.I got it couried down. The Nike Royal LBJ AF1.The shoe sole is red with Lebron James's (LBJ) playing card floating within its translucent sole. This sneaker is not so much of a limited edition. It was a custom made sneaker by Nike for the famous basketballer LBJ.Soon it gained popularity and hit the shelves. The sneaker cannot be found in most Asian countries yet but i'm quite sure it will in the long run.Anyway,it's worth buying.Only US$320 and it's yours!

My sneakers(left)
Hi,there.Being crazy over Nike's limited edition sneakers ,i recently added a another pair to my collection of 30 pairs. The new kid on the block is not any ordinary one as i spent a fortune over it.It's one of my most prized pair of sneakers.A few of my friends, who are not Nike buffs think i'm nuts as i told them on the price tag was a 4-digit number.Hey,people, there's like only 50 pairs in the whole world. The Nike Heineken Dunk SB.It was created when Nike teamed with Heineken Beer .The whole sneaker is green, just like the Heineken logo, which is also on the sneaker.

Artist's protest feels the noose(top)
The death penalty,it's quite cruel and now more and more Singaporeans want to government to abolish it.It was a rare public display of protest against the death penalty that even Singapore's arts community didn't want the world to see.Titled "I am going to send you to a better place", the now infamous send-off from veteran hangman Darshan Singh, the disturbing artwork is the only act of open defiance in the city-state during the final days of condemned Australian drug-trafficker Van Tuong Nguyen.Slovenian art student Matija Milkovic Biloslav had displayed under falling nooses a single standing stool carrying a card with Van's execution number, C856, a very deliberate reference to the Melbourne man, scheduled to be hanged at dawn this Friday. But after The Australian unexpectantly attended last Friday night's opening of the exhibition at the Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts, the self-censorship that pervades the country of four million took hold.Over the weekend, The Australian newspaper was threatened with legal action by Lasalle directors if it published a picture of the work and all requests for an interview with the artist were denied. The card carrying Van's execution number was hastily removed. The college, which receives government funding, said the artwork was about suicide. The reaction of the art college is typical of the sensitivity in Singapore to the very limited political and social debate allowed by the long-ruling People's Action Party.Local coverage of Van's trial, conviction and sentence has been almost non-existent in the government-owned media, with daily reports only appearing in the past week and limited to the outcry in Australia or a defence of the looming execution. The apparent controls now seem to be extended to Mr Singh, the 73-year-old grandfather who was set to carry out Van's execution after a 46-year gallows career in Singapore's Changi prison.Mr Singh, who was first revealed as Van's hangman in The Australian last month, was reported at the weekend as saying he would not be hanging Van after all. It would have been his 869th execution. But a close friend of Mr Singh doubts if he is telling the truth."Now that he has been exposed as the hangman, the authorities want to deny that he will be the one who will hang Nguyen," said the friend, who did not wish to be named."Singh is under pressure not to get involved in any more publicity. They know the whole world will be watching."Two of Van's closest friends, Kelly Ng and Bronwyn Lew, have arrived in Singapore to visit him as he awaits his fate."Being strong for him is what we need to do," Ms Lew said. "To smile, that is important."

Ex hangman Darshan Singh (left)
I wasn't aware of it at first, but now,Singapore has sacked its long-serving hangman on the eve of the execution of Australian drug courier Van Tuong Nguyen.
A new executioner is expected to be flown into Singapore this week – possibly from Malaysia – to carry out Nguyen's death sentence as scheduled on Friday, despite pleas for mercy from Australia. The 25-year-old from Melbourne will become the first prisoner in Singapore in 46 years not to be sent to his death by Darshan Singh. The 74-year-old grandfather was dumped after his identity and picture was revealed by The Australian newspaper.Mr Singh said he was in big trouble and was out of a job."It has been very, very difficult for me," he told The Sunday Telegraph. "I am not the hangman any more."Mr Singh said he would miss the $400 fee for each execution but was relieved he would not be placing the noose around Nguyen's neck. "In a way, I am happy," he said. The hangman's sacking comes as a series of heartbreaking letters from the condemned drug courier reveal his deep regret for his crime and an understanding that he must pay with his life."I truly believe God put me here for a reason," he wrote from death row, after Singapore rejected his clemency bid."And now that his plans for me have almost been achieved, he is preparing for me little baby angels to play with when I return."He also explains his deep sorrow for those whose lives have been ruined by drugs."I found myself in deep sorrow for the true victims – the families of those who suffer as a result of losing a loved one to drugs," he wrote. "This has put many things into perspective for me."He believes his weaknesses have cost him his life and said he blames only himself: "I accept responsibility for my actions."What hurts him, he said, was the pain of losing his mother.Australia's Catholic bishops yesterday wrote to Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, urging him to reconsider clemency for the condemned man.Nguyen was caugh

On New Year's day Sunday, the Sunday Times (the pro-government mouthpiece Straits Times' Sunday edition) published a piece by one of it's journalist, K.C Vijayan. Titled "Should Singapore consider execution by lethal injection?". What a way to start the New Year by talking about how to kill effectively & efficiently!!
Anyway, I strongly recommend everybody, especially Singaporeans, to read this new book called Hung At Dawn by M Ravi. It is available at most bookshops here. After my post, you will find the full synopsis of the book from it's back cover. It is a very revealing book about Singapore's legal system especially pertaining to the death penalty. And of course, the human drama. All written in an easy to read and understandable format for the man/woman in the streets.I just want to mention two incidents involving the Chief Justice of Singapore. These incidents are recounted in detail in Hung At Dawn. Both relate to the Vignes Mourthi case in 2003 which you can also read in full in the book.Firstly, Mourthi's lawyer M Ravi, in a final appeal in the Court of Appeal, asked whether ".....the Deputy Public Prosecutor is still maintaining that an innocent man can be hanged due to procedural matters." The Chief Justice replied "Yes; the answer is yes."Secondly, when the condemned man requested the reasons for his execution, the Chief Justice replied "the decision would be published in due course and everyone could find the reason there". Thing is, Mourthi was to be executed the next morning!!!These were extremely pathetic and callous replies from someone who happens to be the Chief Justice of Singapore!!! For now, I can only shake my head in disgust and anger at such an attitude.Anyway, please get the book and read it 'cos all you're going to get from the pro-government media is one side of the picture.Related: Book Review of Hung At Dawn by Charles Tan
Synopsis of Hung At Dawn on what first seemed like just another day, a young Malaysian commuter-worker was arrested in Singapore in September 2001, a nation which has the highest per capita execution in the world (according to 2004 report by Amnesty International). The charge: drug-dealing. He had just handed an undercover narcotics agent a small bag packed with 27.65g of heroin and received $8,000 in return. But was he really a drug-dealer? The young man swore his innocence, insisting that he was only doing a favor for an old family friend, who had asked him to pass along some religious incense to an associate and collect some money from him.
From there, the young man went on a rapid plunge downward through the dark hole of a system he had little understanding of. He found himself facing a mandatory death penalty for dealing drugs and was dragged quickly through the few stages the Singapore justice system allows between arrest and execution: trial, the single appeal, and the clemency plea to the president – all to no avail. The story might have ended right there for this young man, as it has for so many others found guilty of capital crimes in Singapore. It would have if not for a veteran human rights activist and a young lawyer who took up the cause and brought the young Malaysian's fight into legal areas never before dared in this tightly regulated city-state.Hung At Dawn is the true story of the desperate fight to save this young man from a possible miscarriage of justice, veering around and leaping over all the roadblocks the legal system here sets up. It also tells the story of a second, even more well-known case the young lawyer fought in defence of a convicted drug-dealer two years later. This tale, also true in every detail, involves a charismatic figure who had risen from grinding poverty to become a kind of national hero in Singapore (having won a medal in the Jet-Ski World Championship), only to fall when personal problems led him to start using and dealing in soft drugs. Caught at a border crossing, this former hero was sentenced to die for possession of just over 1 kilo of cannabis! The latter part of Hung At Dawn looks at the unprecedented campaign which Guardian described as a “high profile campaign” in their report entitled “Singapore finally finds a voice in death row protest”. To save this man's life, a campaign that stretched beyond the courts into the streets to engage the general Singapore public and brought together a wide coalition of people galvanized by this particular case and the wider struggle to bring Singapore's drug laws more into line with international humane standards.

Lol,i tried changing the template of my blog but it didn't work out.Everything went hay-wire.Luckily now everything's back to normal.Today woke up at 6.15 a.m.I had to go see Dr Wee at NUH(National University Hospital) again. For those of you who don't know who is he,well,i'm under him for braces.Currently i'm wearing this thing called a twin-block.Its sort off like braces but it is used to prepare you for braces.Usually people wear it after they take out their braces but i have no idea why Dr Wee is vice-versa.If you have to eat,do sports or when you are feeling uncomfortable,it is advisable to take out the twin-block.(you can take it out yourself).Anyway if you want to get a feel of it,go get braces then you can wear it till you're sick of it.Twin-block costs between 4 to 500 bucks.

Hmm,just wondering if anyone watched Get Real yesterday.Get Real is a brand new local inquistive series which takes you into the heart of living in Singapore.Get Real brings you a micro but personal perspective of issues that affect you. You will walk away feeling that you have seen aspects of a story which you have not thought of before. In yesterday's episode,it touched on one of the two most hottest issues in Singapore.Teens recording their sexual activity on their hansphones via their handphone camera and teens on the streets after 11pm.The show interviewed some youths to find out what was their take on these two issues. However, many said that they found it 'lame'and for those who on interviewed on the sex issue, there were some who said that they tried it long ago. It's quite sad but true to hear Singaporean youths talking like that. These people have yet to know and understand the seriousness of this problem
